Teso La Monja
The Eguren family, originally from La Rioja, discovered Toro and has stayed with it, persuaded by the land’s potential and by the Tinta de Toro, a grape with great structure, able to convey the minerality of the soils but with a strong character that needs understanding and “taming”. Marcos Eguren understands it perfectly and proved this with the wines of his first project in the region, Numanthia Termes, powerful wines, always subtle and elegant.
Teso La Monja owns over 100 hectares of ungrafted native vines in and around Valdefinjas, Toro and Villabuena del Puente, many of which are up to 130 years old and used to produce their excellent Alabaster and Teso La Monja wines. The soil is very fresh, mainly clay-based with chalky veins in the subsoil and plentiful gravel on the surface. The vineyards are north-facing with very long growth cycles. All these characteristics ensure that the identity of the terroir is conserved and produce the freshness and elegance their wines are well-known for.
