Fontanabianca
For a few vintages now, a whirlwind of changes has been swirling around the Langhe. New energy and a beautiful winery in Neive, one of the municipalities of the legendary Nebbiolo di Barbaresco. At the helm today is Matteo Pola, who was the first to be infected by his father Aldo's irresistible love of the vineyard. "Wine is aroma and elegance", is the family motto. And it can't be said that this principle hasn't inspired the Fontanabianca style, which tells of a lively, agile and fruity Nebbiolo, without detracting from the long maturation that this type of wine requires, also by tradition.
On the typical calcareous-clayey soils of the Langhe, the Pola family manage about 14 hectares, sometimes on steep slopes. These are some of the best vineyards in the Barbaresco area, both for Nebbiolo and other typical varieties. Everything is done by hand and with respect for nature, so much so that Fontanabianca is a Chiocciola winery for SlowFood and belongs to the Piedmontese circuit of "Green Experience" producers, a sort of organic self-certification. The winery is modern in every sense, including the fact that you will find both large barrels and barriques.
It's all in the family, in short, and no more than 70,000 bottles a year, of which less than 20,000 are Barbaresco. The Polas do not squeeze the territory dry, but let it express itself naturally, from vintage to vintage. There are also the crus: Bordini, which gives a textured Nebbiolo with sweet tannins, and Serraboella, juicy, energetic and extremely refined.
