El Escocés Volante

El Escocés Volante is the personal project of the Scottish oenologist and Master of Wine, Norrel Robertson. Norrel and his family came to Spain in 2003 and by 2004 he was already producing his first wine in the DO Calatayud appellation. Over 25 years of experience in the winemaking business were reflected in his very first bottle and ever since then the popularity of his wines has risen even further.

It was back in 1990 when Norrel, with his passion for wine, started to work in winemaking projects around the world, travelling around Italy, Portugal and France and then to far-off winegrowing countries such as Chile and Australia. From 1998 to 2000 he studied to become a Master of Wine, a prestigious international qualification which he obtained with the special distinction of the Robert Mondavi Award, given to the best theoretical presentation of all the participants. He then went on to study the Oenology and Viticulture postgraduate honours degree in New Zealand, graduating with distinction. Finally he moved to Spain in 2003 and immediately fell in love with the Grenache grape which led to him setting up the El Escocés Volante (the Flying Scotsman) winery. Using old vines growing at high altitudes in Aragon with organic agriculture methods, he creates extremely expressive wines with strong connections to the land. He successfully exports wines to over 20 countries and also produces wines in other regions of Spain such as Galicia, Murcia and Valencia, as well as working as an advisor for other wineries in Spain, Chile, and South Africa.

Norrel has not only understood the riches of the Aragon Grenache fruit, but also the wonders of the variety of soil kinds, altitudes, orientations, and micro-climates this area offers. It all comes together to paint a wide palette of colourful, juicy, and flavoursome wines which are exceptionally spicy and aromatic.
