Château Léoville Poyferré
The origins of Château Léoville Poyferré date back to 1638 when Jean de Moytié, an ennobled Bordeaux bourgeois, planted a vineyard in the area. It was one of the first historic estates in the Médoc. Léoville-Poyferré was once part of the much larger Léoville estate until the time of the French Revolution when it was separated into Château Léoville-Las Cases and Château Léoville-Barton. In 1840, Château Léoville-Las Cases was divided again and Château Léoville-Poyferré was created from a piece of land.
Since 1921 it has been owned by the Cuvelier family (who also own Château Le Crock), although it was in the 1970s, when Didier Cuvelier took control of the château, that the quality started to improve. Over the last 20 years, Didier, with the assistance of Michel Rolland since 1995, has turned Léoville-Poyferré into one of the finest estates in St-Julien.
80 hectares of gravel and stone cemented with clayey sands. The deeply rooted vines are divided between 4 varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, followed by 25% Merlot, 5 to 10% Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Traces.
