Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana
Founded in 1792 by Don José Pantaleón Hidalgo, Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana is one of the oldest wineries in the Marco de Jerez region and among the few that have maintained their independent, family-run structure.
Located in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where it is considered quite an institution, the company is run nowadays by the family's fifth generation and is the main producer of Manzanilla, the winery's star product which has won awards in numerous national and international competitions.
Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana possesses more than 200 hectares of vineyards on the famous estates of Balbaina and Miraflores, two of the finest in the Jerez District. There the vines grow on white, chalky soils —poor ground, calcareous, very porous and not very productive— and influenced by the sea which greatly favours the slow and balanced ripening of the grapes. The winery, barely 300 metres from the mouth of the River Guadalquivir, also benefits from this maritime influence for the maturing of its wines, as it leaves its mark upon the ageing and special characteristics of their range of Manzanillas, Amontillados and Olorosos.
