Argiolas
Argiolas is the most important winery on the island of Sardinia, producing archetypal wines from local grape varieties. Antonio Argiolas, who died in 2009 at the age of 102, inherited seven hectares of vineyards from his father in 1938 and was the first on the island to switch to modern viticulture to achieve quality rather than quantity.
His sons, Franco and Giuseppe, replanted the vineyards in the 1980s in order to reduce yields and focus exclusively on Sardinian grapes. Together with winemaker Mariano Murru, the Argiolas family is now recognised as the leading wine producer in Sardinia.
The Argiolas vineyards are located in the Trexenta and Sulcis areas, where the family grows 600 hectares of native Sardinian grape varieties.
The winery produces a classic and prestigious line of wines. The classic wines have a fresh style and are bottled with several D.O.C.s, such as Vermentino di Sardegna and Cannonau di Sardegna.
The late Giacomo Tacis believed that the south of Sardinia had 'the true soul of the island' and helped create the prestigious Argiolas wines, which are bottled under the Isola del Nuraghi IGT label and aged in French barrels. These include Korem, based on Bovale Sardo, and the Cannonau Turriga blend.
