The wine

Viña Zorzal Cuatro del Cuatro is named (fourth of the fourth) after the birthday of the current winery owners’ father, Antonio Sanz, the creator of the Viña Zorzal brand. It is made exclusively from Graciano grapes which, in itself, demonstrates the braveness and strong character of the wine and its producers. Antonio was fascinated by this variety, so common in Rioja blends, and made a firm commitment to its potential for single-variety wines.

An intense and very limited-production wine, it is made using grapes from 40-year-old vines located in Corella, which has a warmer climate than other parts of Navarre, enabling the fruit to ripen perfectly. The best bunches of grapes are collected in small crates and the must then ferments with local yeasts in large French oak barrels before being stood to age in 300-litre barrels. Only the wine that evolves the best is kept as part of the definitive mixture used for the 3,000 bottles of Viña Zorzal Cuatro del Cuatro.

What does this wine taste like?

The resulting wine has a bright garnet colour and intense aromas of fruits of the forest, spices, and blue flowers. Its feel and nose remind you of the soil from where the vines have grown, while it is dry and fresh in the mouth with a lively acidity ensuring a fleshy drink. The green and bitter tones of the Graciano variety stand out among hints of woodland and spices in a nose of great complexity. Its intense minerality confirms this is a splendid elegant wine, with a fine austerity and wonderful clarity. It has a clean, long and dry finish, as expected with a great red wine which is certain to impress. An excellent drink which will continue to grow and become an enviably balanced gem of a wine.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The varietal Graciano 2019 Cuatro del Cuatro reflects the warm and healthy vintage with a wine with 13.93% alcohol and a low pH of 3.35 from vineyards in Corella on stony soils. The grapes fermented in stainless steel and the wine matured in 225-, 300- and 500-liter oak barrels for 15 months. This is a very surprising Graciano, full of personality and with a nose that combines herbal freshness and note of wild berries and flowers. This has a lighter color and a lighter body than the majority of Graciano; they say it's the strain they have. But the wine has very good depth and complexity. It's medium-bodied, combining moderate ripeness and vibrant herbal freshness. This is quite open, intense without excess and with some varietal character. Here, they select the grapes they use and the barrels. 3,060 bottles were filled in February 2021.

Viña Zorzal

Within a very short time, Viña Zorzal has become an absolute benchmark among Navarra wines. The bird on its labels is a symbol which we unquestionably associate with excellent quality wines originating from the Navarra DO, and also from the Rioja DOQ, under the name of el El Inquilino.
