The wine
Viña Real Reserva is a perfect example of a traditional style of wine still made and loved today, a style whose qualities and character have irreverently ignored changes in fashions or other tendencies in the world of wine. On drinking a glass of Viña Real Reserva, you are tasting past, present, and, most probably, the future of wine. An outstandingly balanced wine, with a timeless character, easily recognizable year after year. In a nutshell, a deeply elegant wine.
What does this wine taste like?
Its impressive colour in the glass remains intact however long the wine has aged for, and its aromas and feel immediately remind us of the best Rioja wines. Its liveliness is similar to a Crianza wine but its freshness, combined with complexity and a lingering taste in the mouth, indicate that it can only be a well-aged top quality Rioja Reserva. The best Tempranillo grapes are blended with small quantities of other classic red grapes from the region to create an enviable balance. Its graceful tannins befit its origins in Rioja Alavesa and the hundred years of winemaking experience the winery puts to good use. Roasted aromas and hints of leather which are excessively present in some Reservas, are merely a delicate framework in this wine to wrap around the top-quality, mature red fruit which delights wine-lovers just like a classic Rioja should.

Winemaking
Every sip reminds you of the great Rioja vintages whose wines age wonderfully for decades thanks to their marvellous acidity rather than excessive tannins or extraction. Changes in fashion led many great wines to abandon their own essence in the 1980s and 90s, and not only in Rioja but in other historic regions like Bordeaux too. Many wineries are now making amends and recovering their traditional styles of wine but Viña Real does not have to return to that path as their wines have never left it.

Viña Real
The Viña Real brand was created in 1960 by Cvne, the founding winery of the group which also includes Viñedos del Contino. Although the first wines to be released onto the market and made with Viña Real grapes (in the Elciego area and close to the old royal road, the Camino Real, hence the name) date back to 1920. Today, looking to over a 100 years of Cvne experience, the new Viña Real winery offers modern-style wines that are well prepared for a...
