The wine

Every bottle of Tinto Pesquera Crianza contains a piece of the history of Ribera del Duero. Back in 1975, when Alejandro Fernández and Esperanza Rivera started to produce it, they put Ribera del Duero on the world winemaking map years before the region was classified as an official appellation.

An open wine, brimming with fruit, approachable right from the start but also capable of ageing most elegantly. Good fruit, delicate oak, elegant tannins and character throughout. An essential red for understanding the Ribera del Duero DO.

What does this wine taste like?

Although every vintage seems to come with conditions, possibly due to the effects of climate change, the amazing work carried out both in the vineyards and in the production process ensures that Pesquera Crianza has maintained the freshness which has come to represent its identity. It displays an intense ruby colour with violet glints and a nose dominated by hints of wild fruit and soothing woodland herbal aromas. Liquorice does not take long to appear as well as a subtle hint of spices from its time spent ageing in American oak. It has a fleshy mouthfeel with rounded tannins, a perfectly integrated acidity and a persistent finish.

Winemaking

Traditional methods are used in its production. Destemmed grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks, and then the wine ages for 14 months in American oak barrels. It is also left to stand for a certain period in the bottle before being released for sale.

Vineyards

The grapes come from the firm's own vineyards located at an altitude of 800 metres in the town of Roa. They cultivate over 200 hectares of vines, all over 25 years old, planted in sandy loam soils. The vineyards enjoy a dry and windy Atlantic continental climate with long, cold winters and short, but dry and extremely hot, summers.

Tinto Pesquera

Alejandro Fernández has been intrinsically linked to vine-growing in the Ribera del Duero region for nearly 40 years, following in his father's footsteps and the family tradition. When his first 'Tinto' was released in 1975, he had fulfilled his ambition, perhaps unwittingly then, to produce a great wine. This is the original, his flagship winery, which helped to secure the successful fortunes of a nascent wine-producing DO, where the Tempranillo grape variety has always...
