The wine

This is the bodega's star wine. Elegant and complex, it combines the character of the French varieties (Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah) with a genuine Mediterranean personality.

The wine is an intense ruby-red colour, with terracotta glints, and very dense. The nose displays aromas of ripe fruit, with balsamic, spicy, floral (violets) and mineral notes (graphite, black rock and earth recently dug). Powerful and complex on the palate, it is balanced and elegant with ripe tannins. There is plenty of fullness and harmony on the aftertaste, with toasty and smoky notes.

Aged for 17 months in French oak barrels.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The 2017 Santa Rosa is a similar blend as the 2016—35% Monastrell, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Shiraz—aged in new and second use 225-liter oak barrels for 16 months. It's very Mediterranean and mineral with notes of herbs and graphite, with a lot less oak than in the past, coming through as spicy with an herbal touch. Like its siblings, it has good body but it's not aggressive, the extraction is controlled and they avoid harsh tannins. It has a creamy touch in the palate, and it has weight but is balanced. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.

Enrique Mendoza Viticultor

Enrique Mendoza started out in the world of wine in the 1970s when he planted about 2,000 Muscat vines in a plot near the coast in his hometown of Alfás del Pi (Alicante) following the winemaking tradition of the Marina Baixa region. Enrique's first wines were aimed at the local market and for bulk selling. After these beginnings he extended his properties, taking on the Finca Chaconero estate in Villena in 1989. Here he cultivates 80 hectares of vines ranging from international...
