The wine

Santa Cruz de Artazu is the height of elegance and finesse, a wine with class, a masterpiece that reveals the true potential and beauty of the Navarra Garnacha.

Contained protectively within the bottle is an extremely refined wine, which once poured into the glass, releases a subtle sound that gives fair warning of its fruity texture. Can it possibly be elegant and have so much body? Santa Cruz de Artazu proves this can be true, as this is a wine full of balance: a nose redolent of black berry fruits, juicy, fresh, lightly spiced and with just the right amount of wood; on the palate it has plenty of structure, silkiness, with a slightly salty edge and a touch of caramel sweetness. The style makes us understandably think of its Riojan relation, Artadi: an absolute delight.

So here we have Santa Cruz de Artazu, just as perfect as Artadi!

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

One of the finest vintages produced in recent years is the 2018 Santa Cruz de Artazu, a pure Garnacha from the oldest vineyards on the slopes of the village of Artazu, most of them close to the Santa Cruz Hermitage. The vines are often 90 to 100 years old and are planted on very white, limestone-rich soils at 450 to 600 meters in altitude. It fermented in open-top vats after a 48-hour cold soak and matured in 500-liter French oak barrels for nine months. It's quite austere; the wine is very young and was just bottled before I tasted it. It's a cool vintage with enough rain (almost 200 liters during spring), similar to Rioja. The ripening was slow, and the grapes were picked very healthy. So, the wine is fresh and clean with red fruit and very good tension, following a little in the style of the 2016, sharper and drier than the 2017, with contained ripeness. It's very harmonious and balanced, and it has very fine chalky tannins, long and narrow rather than round and ample. The grapes ripened well and developed full flavors, very Garnacha. 4,000 bottles were filled in December 2020.

Tasted blind. Delicate nose, pure and well delineated. It shows sweet red fruit, strawberry, red berry and candy. Juicy and tasty palate with mellow tannins. Beautiful fresh acidity and well-defined fruit flavours. The wine flows so well with a crunchy texture and a crisp finish. Deep herbal flavours on the back palate. Astonishing Garnacha.

Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu

Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu

Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu belongs to the Artadi group of wineries and is one of two ventures which Juan Carlos López de Lacalle (also of Bodegas y Viñedos El Sequé, in the Alicante D.O.) employs in his attempt to bring out the richness and varietal nuances of such a wholly indigenous grape as the Garnacha. It all began in 1996 with the acquisition of 10 ha of vineyards aged more than 60 years old in the locality of Artazu (Valdizarbe), a well-known, old wine-producing village...
