The wine

Forming part of Penfolds' luxury range, this is one of Australia's most distinctive wines. It came to life in the 1950s and has enjoyed renewed interest since the 1990s. A medium-bodied Shiraz, blended from premium grapes sourced selectively and widely over regions including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Langhorne Creek and Clare Valley. Relying on large, very old vats for maturation, the wine is touched rather gently by the oak. Rich, luxurious and smooth, the intensely lush Shiraz fruit supplies its tremendous flavour.

Bright and intensely dark red in colour, the nose is pure and evocative, displaying aromas of strawberries, blackberries and spicy apple preserve. It is decidedly fresh and vibrant on the palate.

Aged for 15-16 months in well-aged, large oak vats.
