The wine

Penfolds Grange is, without a shadow of a doubt, an iconic wine. It's the most highly-renowned Australian wine, even considered part of Australia's heritage, and one of the best in the world. It began as an experimental wine in 1951, and from then onwards its production has been uninterrupted, gaining its standing as the finest example of the Penfolds art of blending and offering some truly exceptional vintages, genuine wines for cellaring.

Grange is a wine of great concentration, firmness and persistence, a magnificent Syrah which interprets with great beauty and harmony the synergy which is produced naturally between the Syrah grapes and the Australian terroir and climate. Voluptuous, generous and vibrant, it's a wine with an unmistakable style which should not really be opened until some12-15 years after its vintage year and which can be cellared in its best vintages for 20 or 30 years, if not longer.

Englishman Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary bought the Magill Estate in 1844, soon after arriving in Australia. The 500 acres of Grenache were used to start making fortified wines which would be prescribed as a remedy for combating anaemia. In 1870, the couple...
