Mestizaje is the lowest priced wine from Mustiguillo, yet still allowing us to appreciate fully the superb treatment that the Bobal variety receives at this outstanding winery.
Its name originates from the idea of fusing traditional wine-making methods and the most contemporary techniques in cultivation, combining vineyards of bush vines with some singularly innovative ways of planting, mixing Bobal (the local grape) with foreign varieties.
Mestizaje offers a most original coupage, a blend of five different varietals, which makes for a very interesting wine. Each variety undergoes fermentation separately in stainless steel tanks or wooden vats. After resting for three months in wooden tanks, the wine is transferred to previously used French oak barrels where it remains for a further eighteen months.
Mestizaje is a deep, dark cherry colour with purple showing at the rim as a sign of youthfulness. On the nose, the first sensation to surface is of juicy fresh fruit straight from the grapes. With a little aeration, gentle oak notes appear, well-integrated with the fruit. On the palate, it is overwhelmingly pleasant, with an excellent alcohol-acidity balance. Extremely smooth and well-rounded tannins gradually fill the mouth without being too weighty. This is quite an amazing blend, sourced from young grapevines and impeccably made, with the end result being important rather than the varieties involved. The epitome of correctness and balance between the fruit and exactly the right amount of time spent in barrel. An unbeatable wine within its price bracket.

The red 2021 Mestizaje Tinto was produced with a blend of 75% Bobal, 15% Garnacha and 10% Syrah. It has 13.5% alcohol and kept good balance and freshness. It matured in a combination of oak vats and barriques for one year. It's quite classical, serious, balanced and fresh, with a certain complexity, Mediterranean with elegance. 98,926 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2023.
I also tasted the red 2020 Mestizaje, a blend of Bobal with 16% Garnacha and 14% Syrah with 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.56 with 5.65 grams of acidity (tartaric) from their vines in Terrrerazo at 800 meters in altitude. It fermented in French oak and stainless steel and matured in a combination of 225- and 500-liter oak barrels and oak vats for 10 months. It's primary and immediate without the depth and complexity of the 2019 but really pleasant and with a tender, velvety palate with some chalky tannins and a tasty finish. 92,980 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022.
The red 2018 Mestizaje was produced with a blend of 70% Bobal, 19% Garnacha and 11% full-cluster Syrah from head-pruned and dry-farmed vines from their El Terrerazo estate planted mostly in the early 1990s on limestone soils. Each plot and grape variety was fermented separately with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats. It matured in a mixture of oak vats and French barrique for 11 months (there has been a change toward more and more vats and almost no barrels). This has a creamy touch, attractive, approachable and easy to understand, with some spiciness and a round palate. The tannins are fine and the wine comes through as neatly balanced with good freshness. 94,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019.
Made with the Bobal grape indigenous to Alicante region. It has good balance and excellent fruit flavours with a good after taste. I like the Bobal grape, and this is a very good example. . i really want to keep this wine a secret, but it has been my favourite everyday drinking wine. Excellent value for money.

excellent value well balanced red
I have for many years drunk Mestizaje as our regular everyday wine. vests. It's predominant grape is the indigenous Valencian Bobal . The 2016 like other years is well balanced, with good after taste. I prefer it served slightly chilled at about 14c. Extremely good value.

excellent value indiginous grape
The 2017 vintage maintains Mestizaje's standard for producing an excellent wine for every day drinking. Made with local grape 'Bobal' & other grapes, hence the name, it's a well balanced fruit dominated young wine. I recommend.

Good price quality
We drunk already different years and always a good price quality wine. The 2016 needs a few additional months in bottle and served in large glass at 16°, so perfect for summertime.

Bodega Mustiguillo
The Finca Terrerazo estate was acquired by the Sarrión family in the mid 1960s, although the decision to make quality wines was not taken until 1999, and expressly for this purpose they built the magnificently equipped Bodega Mustiguillo.
The estate comprises 90 ha of vineyards planted at an altitude of between 800 and 900 metres, with Bobal the predominant grape variety, although Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Garnacha Tintorera are also grown.
