The wine
Only produced in exceptional years, this limited production Gran Reserva is created with grapes from the small 8-hectare Vinya La Scala plot planted in 1963. Considered to be the first Spanish wine made principally from Cabernet Sauvignon, its name pays homage to the La Scala restaurant Jean Leon founded in Beverly Hills back in the 1950s in the golden age of Hollywood. It was the official wine served at Ronald Reagan's inaugural presidential dinner at the White House in 1981. Thanks to 24 months ageing in French oak barrels and a further 3 years standing in the bottle, the wine displays intense and complex aromas with a good tannic structure and a long and lingering after-taste.

Quite a legend inside and outside the sphere of wine, Jean Leon is none other than Ceferino Carrión, from Santander and a humble background. After a complicated childhood that took him to Barcelona, Paris and New York, he...
