The wine

With the Mourvèdre predominant, this red wine comes over as mature and round with aromas of tiny wild strawberries, spices, thyme, leather and tobacco. In essence, it's elegantly tannic and spicy, with aromatic touches of Morello cherries and Mediterranean bushes. Decanting enhances its spicy nuances.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

Tasted as a sample blended from several foudres, the 2018 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel features scents of sun-warmed stones and ripe raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it's plush and open-knit, already giving a lot of pleasure, and finishing zesty and long.

High tannins make the palate very firm, although there is good balancing acidity. The flavours are very compact, and feel less expressive than in recent vintages. Tight and understated.

Abundant, rich and ripe red fruit with lightly spiced pastry and quite brambly complexity. The palate has a super fleshy, bold and upfront-tannin shape. Fresh and easy. Drink now.

The winery

Château de Beaucastel

In the year 1321, in the time of Pope John XXII, four casks from the papal cellar arrived in Châteauneuf to be filled with wine; that was how the story started of "du-Pape" wine. The history of the Château de Beaucastel, located in the most northerly part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, dates back to 1549, when Pierre de Beaucastel bought a barn and some land in Coudoulet. The winery has belonged to the Perrin family since 1909, and today the project is under the direction...
