Clos Ancestral
2023Spec sheet
The wine
Clos Ancestral has its origins in the project carried out by Familia Torres to recover the winemaking heritage of Catalonia. The past and the future meet in a strange and wonderful combination. Using an old, almost extinct grape variety, Moneu, they wonderfully blend the history and traditions of Penedès with current ideas and are committed to using the excellent winemaking heritage of the area as a guarantee for its future.
The resulting wine is a splendid expression of the varietal essence of Moneu and the landscapes it comes from in the Castell de la Bleda estate. All in all, an excellent treat at a very affordable price.

Winemaking
About half of the wine is aged in second year barrels for 10 months, while the remaining half ages in stainless steel. The painstaking work carried out with the Moneu grapes includes the use of clay jars and amphoras during the winemaking process.

Finca Castell de la Bleda
With years of research, the Torres family have discovered that some grape varieties at risk of disappearing actually have interesting properties and characteristics and could be an excellent option for the future of winemaking in the area thanks to their late ripening and capacity to resist high temperatures and droughts. One such case is Moneu, which they have recovered and now use alongside Grenache and Tempranillo to produce the wonderful Clos Ancestral.
The variety was rediscovered in 1998 in the DO Penedès appellation and reintroduced into the Castell de La Bleda estate in 2016 with the careful grafting of 40-year-old goblet vines. The Tempranillo grapes used in the blend are also cultivated in Castell de la Bleda, whereas the Grenache fruit grows in a nearby plot.
