The wine

Although the Château was founded by the philosopher and winegrower Montesquieu in the 18th century, it was named after Robert Ferran, a lawyer at the Bordeaux Parliament. Montesquieu planted the vines in this exceptional vineyard in the heart of Pessac-Léognan which would produce wines classified back then as "Premiers graves Martillac". The 70 hectares of vines and woodland located near the Crus Classés were run by five generations of the same family from 1880 onwards before management of the Château was taken over by Philippe and Ghislaine Lacoste, descendents of Joseph Béraud-Sudreay, in 1999.

Château Ferran may not be as famous as some of its Cru Classé neighbours but it is an outstanding wine capable of expressing the excellence of this winemaking region. A wine with an attractive and fragrant bouquet of red plums and redcurrants, accompanied with notes of scrubland, violets and earth. Wonderfully fresh with a mineral finish, it is an elegant and complex wine with a great future.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Suckling

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Ferran needs a little swirling before it slowly unfurls, offering notes of stewed black plums, warm cassis and kirsch, plus wafts of unsmoked cigars, crushed rocks and rose oil. The medium to full-bodied palate is laden with muscular black fruits, framed by finely grained tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

Dried blackcurrants, cloves, charred wood, dried leaves and tobacco on the nose. Hot stones, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins. Savory and clay-like notes on the finish. Very typical for the appellation. Try from 2024.
