The wine

Located in the town of La Pobla de Cérvoles, in the DO Costers del Segre appellation of Lleida, the Cérvoles Celler has 55 hectares of vines, most of which are Grenache planted between 1970 and 1989. At heights of over 700 metres in the foothills of the Serra de la Llena mountains which form the natural frontier with Priorat, the vines thrive on the advantages if growing at altitude: significant day/night temperature changes, healthy plants, gravel soils, and so on. The cool nights in the Les Garrigues area within the appellation mean thicker grape skins which leads to a stronger extraction of colour and structure in the winemaking process.

The winery created this wine to show the verticality and purity of the variety, offering the maximum expression of the Grenache fruit. The wine is aged with some stems in large (4,000-litre) French oak vats to carve out its naturally evocative character. The Costers del Segre region is more well-known for its blended wines, and few single-variety Grenaches are produced here — all the more reason not to miss out on this wonderful wine. Cérvoles Garnatxa is pure fruit, expressing vividly the tenderness of the grape variety. Hints of ripe fruit, blackberries in the morning dew, and violets sit alongside sweet subtle tannins. In the glass it is not overly opaque and its charming cherry colour pleases the eye while fine bitter and spicy notes seduce the palate. Elegant mineral and balsamic hints remind us of forests and mountains, giving the wine a balanced character of body and mellowness.
