The wine

For many, and rightly so, Cecchetto is synonymous with Piave wines. A flat corner of eastern Veneto where a difficult grape variety perhaps gives the only regional reds which can compete with the noble cousins of Valpolicella. Giorgio Cecchetto's winery has always interpreted the territory as its guardian, but also by seeing tradition as a heritage to be renewed. It is in the light of this approach that his work, since 1986, has always focused on Raboso, a resistant and late variety that Cecchetto has turned into a stylistically interesting canvas.

In all its versions, Cecchetto's Raboso is a Veneto wine that has made history. The Raboso Piave, a full-breed horse difficult to tame, demonstrates its character already in the vineyard having a very long vegetative cycle: it sprouts first and is one of the last grapes to be harvested. This makes it a unique vine, almost extreme, and perhaps for this reason left aside, because it is intimidating for its strong and angry nature. To reveal the best of oneself requires time, patience and a certain amount of courage.

The three winery estates are in Tezze, pebbly, Lorenzaga, with its loose soils, Cornuda, clayey. Each of these contributes to wines that faithfully represent the territory. Aged for one year in barriques and partly in oak barrels, the classic Raboso is of a typical intense ruby red colour with garnet reflections. The bouquet is full, broad and pleasing, reminiscent of marasca cherry, wild blackberry, vanilla, leather, tobacco and violet. Dry and austere, with a tannin and acidity pleasantly ennobled by the alcohol strength.

Cecchetto Giorgio

The Cecchetto family winery is located in Tezze di Piave, in the heart of the Piave DOC area in the Treviso region of Veneto. This family has a long tradition of growing Raboso grapes in this region. The land is quite flat, located along the valley of the Piave river. It has suffered numerous floods throughout history, and the alluvial soil is very fertile. It can also be quite wet and foggy, making it a challenging environment for many winemakers. The Raboso grape in particular...
