The wine

Artigas is, among Mas Alta’s great wines, the most affordable. It’s produced mainly using Garnacha (60%) grapes, although it also has Cariñena (25%) and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Its Priorat personality is obvious, yet certain Cabernet notes have caught one or two out at first, maybe hinting at a French terrain. After a few minutes the powerfulness and minerality come through, leaving not a shadow of a doubt that Artigas is a magnificent Priorat wine.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The red 2018 Artigas feels a bit creamier, with the oak more noticeable than in the 2017, but the overall balance, integration and mouthfeel is better, especially the texture, with finer-grained tannins and a supple finish. I still notice the new or new-ish oak used for the aging of the Cabernet and Cariñena, which each represent some 10% of the blend. The Garnacha matured in third-use barrels, and the élevage lasted 16 months. 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.

Bodegas Mas Alta

Bodegas Mas Alta

Mas Alta was founded in the village of La Vilella Alta at the end of the nineties (1999) by two Belgian families (Lambrecht and Vanhoutte), with the technical assistance of Michel Tardieu, the eminent French oenologist. They were neither the first nor will they be the last to come over from other countries and establish themselves in this highly-esteemed Catalan region, enthralled by the exceptional nature of this terroir. Although typically Priorat, Mas Alta wines have always...
