Binissalem-Mallorca Wine
Binissalem-Mallorca is the first Designation of Origin of the Balearic Islands, created in 1991. The Binissalem-Mallorca DO is located in the centre of the island of Mallorca. Its history dates back to the 1st century BC and has suffered important ups and downs throughout history, among which, as in many other places, perhaps the most important was phylloxera.
Nowadays, the DO's volume in litres is not very important, but the quality and originality of its wines are constantly growing.
Its wineries are equipped with the latest technology and most of them are family businesses that apply the château criterion to their winegrowing operations: vineyard and winery on the same property.
Their wines have a marked personality, mainly due to the use of indigenous varieties such as Mantonegro (the main red grape), Callet and Gargollassa, although Monastrell, Tempranillo and international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot are also grown; the most widely cultivated indigenous white variety is Moll or Prensal Blanc, accompanied by Giró Ros, Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay and Moscatel.
The Binissalem region is protected by the Alfabia or Tramuntana mountain range from the cold northern winds, giving rise to a benign microclimate considered to be mild Mediterranean, with dry, hot summers and short winters, allowing the production of all kinds of wines, from fruity whites with great balance to mature reds, whites, rosés and sparkling wines.
