The wine

The Mestre Coquet Gran Reserva Brut Nature is the ideal cava to enter the Mestres universe. In its elaboration grapes of the three classic white varieties of the sparkling Catalans are used in similar proportions, although with a certain predominance of the xarel·lo. The vines from which the grapes are obtained by manual harvest have more than 50 years of history, as certified by the old vines planted in a glass.

In the production of each bottle two natural cork stoppers are used. The first is used for the second fermentation in the bottle and is responsible for preserving the wine during the 40 months that it passes in the bottle with its lees, in a horizontal position of rhyme, under the cellar. In Mestres, it is common for long aging cavas (more than 30 months), to carry out periodic removals to favor the process of yeast autolysis, achieving an improvement in structure and complexity. Finally, after disgorgement, manual process performed bottle by bottle, the bottles are covered again with the second natural cork stopper, and its identification plate. As is the tradition in Mestres, the date of disgorgement is always added on the label to help the consumer choose the perfect moment of consumption.

The result of all these attention and care is a straw-yellow wine with greenish reflections. Its foam is fine, with a good evolution in the glass and perfectly fulfills the function of transporting the aromatic richness of this exceptional cava to the palate. In its elegant nose, notes of white fruit (white peach, reinette apple) and citrus (grapefruit, orange peel) stand out, while in its passage through its mouth its structure and openness are felt, with a very well integrated carbonic providing creaminess and counteracting fruit maturity. Its long aftertaste and versatility allow it to pair with virtually any dish.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The 2017 Coquet Gran Reserva Brut Nature was released with no less than 48 months in bottle with lees, but all bottles have the disgorgement date on the back label and the last bottles can have up to 54 months. 2017 was a dry vintage (the last of three: 2015, 2016, 2017), and the wine reflects it, within their levels of freshness, with 12% alcohol, a pH of 3.1 and 5.65 grams of acidity. They look for a house style, a structure and small bubbles, and this entry-level bottling is more complex and older than the great majority of Cava wines. This is their only wine that does not spend time in barrel, but the wine in bottle is aged under cork, which makes a difference when you are talking about long aging in bottle; it might not be worth it for a short élevage, but it does for a long one. The disgorgement of the bottles is all by hand and without freezing the lees. This is a superb entry-level wine that is also released in magnum (the current vintage for the magnums is 2016). It's clean and intense, with very small bubbles, pungent flavors, dry, serious and elegant. 50,354 bottles produced. The bottle I tasted was disgorged in April 2022.
